The Apple Watch Series 2, is likely to be received far better than its predecessor, which wouldn’t be hard. Although there are no major differences, Apple has demonstrated that it has listened to how people use the watch – and admitted that it got it wrong the first time… not by saying it, but through the changes they’ve made.
The new watch is more of a fitness tracker for the active person than a fashion piece or tech watch. The original lost a lot of sales through not having water resistance, a mistake that has been solved in Gen 2. Now, you can track your swims and not panic if it starts to rain – a common complaint from Gen 1 users who don’t always sit inside. In line with this, is the new GPS, which was sorely missed in the original, and should have been a key differentiator.
Functionally, the new watch is easier to use, with a more intuitive interface to reduce the need for fiddly tapping. This news interface will also be available for the original watch.
The target market is clear, however, as Apple Watch Series 2 will have a Nike branded option coming out in October, which will integrate with the newly overhauled Nike running app. There is also a strange feature, which flushes water out of the ports after a swim – press a button and the watch literally spits…it’s both clever and incredibly weird at the same time.
Although the watch is ever so slightly thicker than gen one, this space has not been allocated to a larger battery and usability will be limited as a result. With around five hours on standby, it’s still missing the point regarding how people use a watch. With competitors like FitBit and Jawbone offering a much longer battery life, for a significantly less cost – albeit with far fewer features – Apple managed to solve some of the problems, but not all of them. Undoubtedly the hard-core fitness buffs will be keen to get more detail on their performance and improvements, but for the average Joe or Josephine who likes to track their run, the Apple Watch is still an expensive and impractical beast.
